Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1860 $3 MS61 PCGS. The Bowers estimate of 45 to 60 Mint State survivors is at odds with the population data, which indicates more than double the high end of that range, although the true number of pieces extant probably ranks somewhere in between. The 1860 is a largely unrecognized rarity of the three dollar series in Uncirculated conditions. This example is a no-question Mint State piece, imbued with coppery accents over flaming orange-gold surfaces. The obverse strike is pinpoint-sharp, although the reverse wreath is a bit less so. Few marks exists anywhere on the coin. A prize for the perceptive gold enthusiast.
