Early Half Eagles
1802/1 $5 BD-4, R.7 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a, or perhaps a slightly later die state of the reverse, with a single small die crack from the left shield corner to the scroll. The BD-4 was absent from Harry W. Bass Jr.'s Notebook, with so few pieces known, and the equally rare 1802/1 BD-5 was missing as well. Unfortunately, this sharply detailed piece appears to have had a mount removed, with related damage at 3 and 9 o'clock among the obverse stars, with attempted repair of the stars and smoothing of the adjacent fields. The reverse shows no impairments other than some faint hair-thin lines and a few tiny digs, as well as a Mint-related planchet flaw at cloud 8. Nonetheless, this is a seldom-offered opportunity to acquire the rare BD-4 overdate variety. Pleasing orange-gold color remains on both sides. The Bass-Dannreuther book estimates just 10 to 12 survivors of this rare die pair.
