Early Half Eagles
1803/2 $5 BD-1, R.4 -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The main area of tooling is obvious beneath Y of LIBERTY and star 9, where a noticeable attempt to remove a defect was made. We note other hair-thin lines in the obverse and reverse fields to minimize marks. Sharp definition remains on the raised elements, which seem to have escaped any handwork. A scrape at the eagle's beak and the nearby field star is the most-apparent reverse mark. Pleasing greenish-gold color with much mint luster remains. Bass-Dannreuther estimate 150 to 200 known survivors of the 1803/2 BD-1 die pair.
