Early Half Eagles
1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, AU55 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. The late die state now shows bold clashing below the ear and above the date. Heritage cataloger and senior numismatist Mark Borckardt recently complete a survey of early half eagle sales based on our Auction Archives. His research shows 71 appearances of the 1811 BD-1 half eagle in the past 24 years, compared to 113 appearances of the BD-2 variety. It is believed that 175 to 250 examples of the Tall 5 variant exist. This Choice AU representative has glowing luster around the peripheries and rich yellow-gold coloration. A few wispy marks and scattered tick are minimal compared to the overall appeal of this well-defined Capped Bust Left five dollar. Housed in a green label holder.
