1874-S $5 AU55 NGC. "The 1874-S is very rare in all grades. The typical 1874-S is only Fine or VF and I do not know of a single specimen that even approaches mint state." The words of David Akers continue to ring true, with the 1874-S sill unknown in Uncirculated condition. The finest certified examples grade AU58, and this Choice AU piece clearly approaches them in terms of quality. The strike is razor-sharp except the lower obverse, upper reverse, and the mintmark, as usual. Pale gold surfaces are partly lustrous and lightly abraded. Census: 12 in 55, 6 finer (3/17).
