Liberty Half Eagles
1890-CC $5 MS62+ PCGS. Variety 1-A. The 1890-CC and 1892-CC half eagles are of comparable scarcity among the late-date Carson City fives, bookends to the much more-available 1891-CC. This 1890-CC example is at the high end of the affordable range, since the value increases dramatically at MS63 or finer conditions. Lustrous yellow-gold surfaces show glimpses of prooflikeness around the raised motifs and only tiny marks dot the surfaces. The strike is a trifle weak at the central obverse, and the eagle's neck and head are incompletely brought up as often seen for the issue. It is worth noting that PCGS has awarded the Plus designation to this solitary example at the MS62 level. Population: 94 in 62 (1 in 62+), 77 finer (3/17).
