Liberty Double Eagles
1853-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1. A total of 71,000 double eagles were struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1853, making this issue scarcer than any of its O-mint predecessors, though not as rare as the famous issues that would come a few years later. Doug Winter estimates 84 to 102 pieces survive in all AU grades with only six to eight Uncirculated representatives. Smooth orange-gold surfaces exhibit minimal blending over the high points and faint wispy marks in the fields. Boldly defined. Encapsulated in a green label holder.
