Liberty Double Eagles
S.S. Republic Founders Limited Edition Set #18 of 50 Silver and Gold Coins. Ex: S.S. Republic. Housed in an oversized NGC holder, this is an attractive group of three shipwreck recovery cons from the ill-fated S.S. Republic that sank en route from New York to New Orleans in October, 1865. The passengers and crew escaped the sinking ship, but a fortune in coins and cargo was lost until Odyssey Marine Exploration discovered the wreck approximately 100 miles off the Georgia coast. The set includes an 1847 Liberty eagle in AU50 condition, with lightly abraded surfaces but substantial detail and a bit of remaining luster; an 1861 Liberty double eagle in MS60 with lustrous, yellow-gold color, and scattered abrasions but no wear; and an 1861-O Seated half dollar, WB-103, Die Pair 13, with the diagnostic CSA "bisected date" vertical die crack, running from the edge past 6 in the date and into Liberty's lower gown, graded Unc Details, Shipwreck Effect. The insert does not provide grades for the coins, so those listed are our grades. (Total: 3 coins).
