Liberty Double Eagles
1861-O $20 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Variety 1. The surfaces show signs of having been whizzed to remove abrasions, and subsequently polished. Each side is unnaturally smooth and unmarked with deep yellow-gold color. Design definition remains bold on the stars, hair curls, and wing feathers, though partial merging is evident. The 1861-O famously represents the final New Orleans issue until 1879, the facility having been taken over by the State of Louisiana and the Confederacy beginning in January 1861. A total of 17,741 pieces were struck under the authority of all three governments. Fewer than 300 examples are believed extant.
