Liberty Double Eagles
1870-S $20 MS61 PCGS. This is one of the more accessible Type Two double eagle issues in circulated grades. Many of the 982,000 coins struck served time in circulation, as gold and silver were the only acceptable mediums of exchange in the West Coast economy. The 1870-S becomes a formidable challenge in Uncirculated condition. Even the landmark Saddle Ridge Hoard only turned up a pair of coins in MS62 (plus several coins in XF to AU), representing some of the finest-known examples of the date. Vibrant frost radiates from marvelous rose-gold surfaces. The devices are well-struck with a number of bagmarks over the obverse and a relatively clean reverse. Population: 59 in 61, 14 finer (3/17).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 9/2015), lot 4227.
