Liberty Double Eagles
1884-CC $20 AU58+ PCGS. Variety 1-A. PCGS detected a slight bit of rub, thus the borderline Uncirculated grade for this lustrous, frosty, and minimally marked Carson City twenty. Likely a foreign repatriate, the coin may have come from Europe where U.S. gold pieces functioned in financial transactions between banks. At each stop, the coins were counted and handled -- most received small marks and possibly the appearance of faint wear as a result. In contrast, double eagles that were exported to South America seldom left their original bags and maintained their original Mint State conditions to a greater extent. Lovely rich-gold color joins nearly full cartwheel luster and a sharp strike to earn the PCGS Plus designation awarded to this high-end coin.
