Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1908-S $20 XF40 PCGS. Not surprisingly, San Francisco was the last branch mint to receive dies for the Saint-Gaudens design. The coin press adjustments to accommodate the edge collar delayed striking the new double eagles, and when the situation was remedied only 22,000 pieces were struck -- a minuscule mintage for any 20th Century gold coin. The West Coast was still a gold-using economy, and the few coins struck circulated in local commerce. Most 1908-S twenties are found in circulated grades. This orange-gold XF example retains a modicum of pleasant mint luster with generally smooth surfaces, a few small marks, and moderate wear on the high points.
