Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1908-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The first year of the Saint-Gaudens With Motto double eagle struck at the San Francisco mint saw a low mintage of only 22,000 pieces. PCGS and NGC have certified fewer than 1,000 specimens in all grades, primarily in About Uncirculated through MS62. Higher-grade coins are elusive, especially in MS65 and finer condition.
A delicate blend of honey-gold and rose patination resides on the lustrous surfaces of this MS62 offering. The design features are sharply struck, particularly on the panes and pillars of the Capitol building and the eagle's plumage. Minute surface and rim marks, somewhat more so on the reverse, limit the grade. Population: 71 in 62 (1 in 62+), 80 finer (3/17).
