Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1925-D $20 MS61 PCGS. With some notable exceptions, mintages of double eagles in the 1920s were large. More than 2.9 million pieces were struck at the Denver Mint in 1925, a total larger than the Philadelphia mintage (2.8 million coins) but less than the San Francisco total of over 3.7 million pieces. Few coins were minted for domestic circulation -- rather, they were stored in Treasury vaults to support gold certificates and some were exported. After the Gold Recall melts and foreign repatriations, it is estimated that a mere 1,000 1925-D twenties survive in all grades. This lustrous and attractive wheat-gold example shows light abrasions that determine the grade. The coin is well-struck with strong eye appeal.
