Territorial Gold
(1842-52) G$1 A. Bechtler Dollar, 27G. 21C., Plain Edge AU55 PCGS. K-24, R.3. Long after the opening of the branch mint at Charlotte, local residents still preferred the private gold coinage of the Bechtlers, especially in the sparsely populated areas of central and western North Carolina. Without a doubt, the Charlotte Mint and its officials were considered outsiders. The Bechtlers, Christopher and August, gained the trust of their neighbors through the production of well-made gold coins, such as this gold dollar that contained 27 grains of 21 karat gold. This Choice AU specimen has a wavy planchet as usual, with brilliant green-gold color and nearly full luster. An impressive specimen. Listed on page 389 of the 2017 Guide Book.
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 10/2012), lot 6438; PNG New York Invitational (Heritage, 10/2014), lot 4558.
