1851 $50 RE Humbert Fifty Dollar, Reeded Edge, 887 Thous. -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. K-7, R.4. This 1851 Hubert "slug" has a reeded edge and the reverse ribbon around the border close to the engine turning. These large fifty dollar gold pieces circulated extensively in the West prior to the establishment of the San Francisco Mint, and their iconic octagonal design remains emblematic of the Gold Rush period. As a result, they are always in high demand. Most pieces were eventually melted, and those that survive typically grade XF. Remarkably, this well-worn example avoided the melting pot. The peripheral legends are difficult to discern, but the date is readable. Myriad abrasions are peppered over each side.
