1861 $5 Clark, Gruber $5 White Metal Die Trial, K-10A, R.8, MS63 NGC. Clark, Gruber & Co. struck both copper and white metal die trials from the same dies as their regular-issue gold coinage. The die trials were struck with both plain and reeded edges and all varieties are very rare. This impressive white metal specimen has a reeded edge, but that feature is not visible in the NGC holder. The design elements are well-detailed and the lustrous surfaces are lightly marked, under attractive shades of lavender patina.
