Seated Half Dollars
1860-S 50C Medium S, WB-102, Die Pair 2, R.3, AU55 PCGS. CAC. The 1860-S mintage was about average for the time period, when small change was always in short supply on the booming West Coast. It seems remarkable that just two die pairs (one with a Large S mintmark, one with a Medium S) achieved the entire mintage, but no further varieties have surfaced over the years. This is a blatantly original example of the Medium S variety. Choice surfaces display robust, old-silver color with deeper accents in sheltered areas. A crisp strike shows little wear over minimally marked surfaces. Population (all varieties): 17 in 55, 46 finer. CAC: 1 in 55, 6 finer (3/17).
