The male figure on the obverse is Aretas III of Nabatea (87/4-62/59 BC), who was forced to pay Aemilius Scaurus a bribe in order to convince Scaurus to withdraw from his attack on Aretas' capital city of Petra. This bribe was arranged by Antipater, the advisor to Hyrcanus II of Judaea, who was a friend of Aretas III.
