SUMENEP: Paku Nata Ningrat, 1812-1854, AR ducaton, KM--, Hafner-115, S1c, countermarked Madura star variant on Netherlands Holland Friesland AR ½ ducaton dated 1766 (KM-105), cleaned, holed twice and repaired with one hole covered by hand engraved star-like design, VF on Fine host. According to Netscher and Van der Chijs, Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat installed in 1818/19 a commission for countermarking foreign silver money. This countermark is found on large silver pieces, like ducatons, Maria Theresa thalers, and milled Spanish 8 reales pieces and their fractions. This countermark is mainly found on coins dated from the second half of the 18th century. Although it is commonly attributed to the rule of Sultan Paku Nata Ningrat, this is not confirmed.
