Johann Frederick I, also called Johann the Magnanimous, or St. Johann the Steadfast (by Lutherans), was Elector of Saxony and Head of the Protestant Confederation of Germany (the Schmalkaldic League). He was known as the "Champion of the Reformation". His cousin Georg "der Bärtige" (the Bearded), a Duke of Saxony and Margrave of Meissen, was a stanch opponent of Martin Luther's Reformation for which he awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece.
