18th Century Engraved Token, Dover Castle, 1778, 27.2mm., 8.37g, Jno Webster / Dover Castle / 1778 in three lines, divided by satyr and flowers, rev. Mary Abigall / Webster - Born / June the 3rd / 1758 in four lines, surrounding an arrowed heart, surviving hand engraving very fine, a novel and unique piece of social history.
provenance
Archival research indicates that the most likely candidates for the named individuals are a Mary, daughter of John and Elizabeth Webster, who was baptised in Shoreditch, London on 20th August 1758. Given the overt allusion to Dover Castle, it is possible that John had a military background, involving his garrisoning there at a time of heightened tensions between England and France. Further research is needed.
Estimate: £30.00 - £50.00
