Celtic, Cantii, 'Touto', in the name of Eppillus (c.AD 10-15), silver Unit, 'Walking Victory' type, 1.27g, diademed head left, with 'flaming' hair and beard of pellets, rev. winged victory walking right, holding sword at waist, e-p across field (VA 442; BMC 1133-4; ABC 432, same dies), a field find hence light porosity, but nonetheless very fine and extremely rare with only 5 other specimens known.
notes
The mysterious touto inscription is entirely unique to this issue and has thus far confounded definitive academic interpretation. It is possible in the light of the reverse legend, that this 'name' alludes to a short-lived regent under the contemporary Cantiian ruler Eppillus. However it could quite simply be a currently incomprehensible title or honour relating to the latter, and already well-documented Iron age king.
