Calling at Pergamum during the march east which resulted in the Parthian War of AD 214-215, Caracalla took the opportunity to visit the shrine of the healing god Asclepius in the hopes of some respite from the ailments that plagued him. Marking the occasion, this reverse type depicts the emperor presenting himself to a serpent representative of the god, and his son Telesphorus.
