1786 NJERSY New Jersey Copper, No Coulter VF20 PCGS. M. 12-G, W-4790, R.4. Although more than 140 varieties of New Jersey coppers are known today, a nearly complete Guide Book set is a more reasonable goal, with 23 of the 26 types being obtainable. One of those types is this 1786 variety with the date below the plow beam, and without the coulter (a small blade that cuts the ground in advance of the plowshare). This pleasing piece has smooth surfaces with intermingled maroon and chestnut patina. Listed on page 71 of the 2018 Guide Book.
