Bust Dimes
1836 10C JR-2, R.2, MS64 PCGS. A large mintage of nearly 1.2 million Capped Bust dimes was struck in 1836, with three die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the JR-2 variety, easily identified by the unusual bisecting die crack on the obverse. The Mint began using steam-powered coin presses in 1836 and some researchers believe this die crack suggests the JR-2 was struck on the steam press, while the other varieties of 1836 were produced on the old screw press. This sharply detailed Choice example offers lightly marked, lustrous surfaces, with highlights of magenta and pale gold toning. Population: 25 in 64 (2 in 64+), 15 finer (4/17).
