Proof Flying Eagle Cents
1856 1C Snow-9 PR58 PCGS. A golden-brown Borderline Uncirculated example of the famous introductory cent issue. The 1856 Flying Eagle cent was first struck as a pattern, from Snow-3 business strike dies, to demonstrate the new and smaller cent diameter to Federal government officials. A few years later, Snow-9 proof dies were used to produce unofficial restrikes for sale to numismatists, who clamored for examples of the trendy low mintage key. The present well-struck specimen shows no signs of rub, but the field reflectivity is understated. As identifiers, we note inconsequential marks on the bottom of the T in CENT and below the first A in AMERICA.
