Indian Cents
1877 1C MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. Like many key dates in various series, the 1877 Indian cent is heavily traded at auction and usually available for a price. However, examples are rarely seen as fine as the MS66 grade level, regardless of color designation. The last Premium Gem Red and Brown example that we sold was an NGC coin in lot 4018 of our January 2015 FUN Signature sale, where it realized $32,900. The present coin is easily equal to that piece in terms of visual and technical merit. The strike lacks completeness only on the top three headdress feathers, and the luminous surfaces are devoid of abrasions and spotting. Rich olive-gold, amber-red, and copper-orange hues ornately decorate the original surfaces. No coins are graded MS67 at either leading service, regardless of color designation. Population: 5 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (4/17).
