Early Half Dimes
1794 H10C V-4, LM-4, R.4, MS63 PCGS. CAC. A leaf tip is under the left side of the U in UNITED, and one berry is under the I, promptly diagnosing the LM-4 die pairing. More classically stated, there are three inner berries under the left wing, and no outer berries under that wing. The strike is sharp for a 1794, with some blending on the eagle's breast feathers and the foremost leg. Bold clash marks appear on each side.
Although designated as R.4, Logan and McCloskey note in Federal Half Dimes 1792-1837 that this is the "most common of the four 1794 die marriages." This piece offers exceptional, original mint-green, aqua, and pinkish-gray patina. While the surfaces are suggestive of a finer grade, a well-hidden scrape appears between STATES and OF on the reverse, and perhaps the luster that is somewhat subdued by the intense color that perhaps precludes an even finer grade. Population: 17 in 63, 18 finer. CAC: 5 in 63, 6 finer (4/17).
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2007), lot 1600.
