Early Half Dimes
1797 H10C 15 Stars, V-2, LM-1, R.3, XF40 PCGS. CAC. The half dimes of 1797 were struck with 15, 16, and later 13 stars around Liberty's portrait, representing the addition of states to the Union. Late in the year, Mint officials realized it would be increasingly difficult to continually add stars around the obverse and reverted to the original 13 colonies. The V-2, LM-1 variant is slightly more accessible than later die pairings. This is a marvelously original XF40 Small Eagle half dime with attractive antique patina. The motifs are well-detailed, with slight merging over the curls and feathers. From a reported mintage of 44,527 pieces.
