Bust Dimes
1829 10C Curl Base 2, JR-10, FS-301, R.6, VF35 PCGS. The base of the 2 is distinctly curved on the JR-10 obverse die that is known in combination with a single reverse, and only about 50 examples are known from the die marriage, mostly in VG and lower grades. John McCloskey is credited with the discovery of the Curl Base 2 in 1973.
This coin is tied with one other example as the finest-known of the type at the top of the VF range, and it is a recent discovery. The Condition Census for the variety is supported by just five other lower-level Very Fine coins that are thought to exist. Rich blue and steel toning in the fields accents the light gray devices of this pleasing piece. Both sides show trivial handling marks that are consistent with the grade. This is an extremely important offering for the advanced Capped Bust dime collector. Population: 2 in 35, 0 finer (4/17).
