1852 25C MS66 PCGS. CAC. Briggs 2-B. The 1 in the date aligns with the fifth vertical shield stripe. The 1852 is an underrated issue with mintage of 177,060 pieces. Much of that production was likely melted, as the value of silver rose considerably relative to gold during the early 1850s. In 1991, Larry Briggs gave the 1852 an R.5 rating in Uncirculated condition. Today, PCGS CoinFacts estimates 50 Mint State pieces survive, but the population data at the leading services reveals just five MS66 submissions in all, likely including duplications, with a single finer example reported at NGC -- the incomparable Eric P. Newman coin in MS68 ★.
This remarkable Premium Gem boasts satiny luster and a rich layer of multicolor patina that comprises shades of crimson, gold, lavender, blue, and green. The overlay is inarguably original and generates inimitable visual quality. The devices are well-struck, and there are only a handful of visible flecks on each side. Truly one of the finest examples of this date. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer. CAC: 3 in 66, 0 finer (4/17).
