Early Half Dollars
1796 50C 15 Stars, O-101, T-1, R.5 -- Plugged, Repaired -- NGC Fine Details. Amato-158. The present Fine Details offering is an important opportunity for the type collector to obtain a Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar. This coveted piece of Americana is a significant "stopper" for anyone attempting to complete a type collection of United States coinage. Some may question the feasibility of investing in a coin that has been plugged and repaired. But the high prices being realized for original, problem-free specimens prevent many collectors from acquiring an example for their collection. Moreover, this particular coin exhibits well-defined design elements, especially on the obverse. Liberty's hair shows fairly strong detail, as do the eye, ear, drapery lines, and the peripheral devices. Indeed, few would likely argue with the obverse being being classified as Very Fine, maybe even VF25 Details. And in the opinion of this cataloger (JPA), even the reverse possesses some VF Detail.
Both sides reveal steel-gray patina and soft bluish accents. Some smoothing is noted in the obverse fields, and TY in LIBERTY was re-engraved, as was the lower-right reverse ribbon. The usually seen crack from the rim at 5 o'clock to the bottom of the bust has been removed by smoothing in that area, but becomes visible from the right side of the bust through stars 15-14. Despite the impairments, this coin will be an appropriate, and perhaps "affordable" addition to an advanced U.S type collection.
