Seated Half Dollars
1861-O 50C WB-101, Die Pair 6, R.3 MS65 NGC. Struck from a fresh obverse die employed by the State of Louisiana while that authority operated the New Orleans Mint prior to Confederate takeover. A diagnostic, lumplike defect on the upright of R in AMERICA confirms the variety. This sharply struck example displays mottled shades of blue and tan-gold toning with lilac hues and colorful iridescence near the margins. All Seated halves from the 1860s are very scarce in Gem condition, and this attractive MS65 coin is no exception. Census: 9 in 65, 3 finer (5/17).
