Seated Dollars
1859-S $1 MS62 PCGS. OC-1, R.2. Osburn-Cushing Die State a/d. The inaugural silver dollar from this branch mint, the 1859-S was produced to the extent of just 20,000 coins. Most of these were exported and subsequently melted, and even high-grade circulated survivors will set one back several thousand dollars. Uncirculated examples are even rarer, with few coins grading above the present level of preservation. There is some hallmark strike softness over the reverse portrait, but all other features are bold, if not sharp. The number of distractions is few for the grade -- a small area of tiny marks in the right obverse field is noted for accuracy. A pleasing example, nonetheless, with a delicate overlay of steel-gray and mixed pastel colors. Population: 9 in 62, 9 finer (4/17).
