Morgan Dollars
1880-S $1 MS68+ PCGS. The Morgan dollar was the only silver denomination struck at the San Francisco Mint in 1880, as the Mint struggled to comply with the provisions of the Bland-Allison Act, which mandated the government purchase of millions of ounces of silver to support the price of that precious metal in the face of rising production from the Western mines. A large mintage of 8.9 million silver dollars was accomplished at the San Francisco facility, with most of the unneeded coins stored in Treasury vaults for release in future decades.
Surprisingly, the 1880-S was one of the best produced issues of the series. The present coin is a magnificent Plus-graded MS68 example, with razor-sharp definition on all design elements and virtually pristine surfaces. A few subtle hints of pale gold toning add to the terrific visual appeal. Both sides radiate vibrant mint luster and some areas show hints of prooflike reflectivity at selected angles. PCGS has graded five numerically finer examples (4/17).
