Morgan Dollars
1893-CC $1 MS64 NGC. The fabulous Comstock Lode was finally playing out by 1893, and the far-reaching financial panic that gripped the nation that year resulted in the repeal of the Sherman Silver Purchase Act. With no mandate to produce millions of silver dollars every year, and declining sources of bullion in the area, the Carson City Mint was considered expendable, and the famous Western facility ceased coinage operations on June 1, 1893. Fortunately for present-day numismatists, a small mintage of 677,000 Morgan dollars was struck before the doors closed and collectors value those coins as mementos of a romantic era of the American West.
The present coin is an impressive Choice example, with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout. The well-preserved surfaces are blanketed in natural shades of golden-brown, lavender-gray, and violet toning. NGC has graded eight numerically finer examples (5/17).
