Proof Morgan Dollars
1880 $1 PR68 Cameo NGC. The Trade dollar was only produced in proof format in 1880, sparking a short-lived, but extensive, speculation in proof sets that year. The increased demand for proof sets resulted in a generous mintage of 1,355 proof Morgan dollars, as a kind of "coat tail" effect. Despite the larger than average production total, the 1880 Morgan dollar is very rare in PR68 condition, with Cameo surfaces. This magnificent specimen exhibits razor-sharp definition on the richly frosted design elements, and the fields are deeply reflective, creating intense cameo contrast. The essentially brilliant surfaces show a few delicate hints of pale gold toning, enhancing the incredible eye appeal. Census: 16 in 68 Cameo (3 in 68★), 1 finer (5/17).
