Proof Gold Dollars
1877 G$1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. This Gem proof 1877 gold dollar has a perceptible orange-peel effect due to improper die annealing on both sides, and a loupe reveals some small dotlike planchet impressions of little significance on the portrait of Liberty. Both the proof and circulation-strike issues of this evocative date were produced in limited numbers, 20 of the former and 3,900 of the latter. This coin's yellow-orange fields sparkle with reflectivity and contrast nicely against the deeper reddish-orange, frosted devices on each side, producing an appealing degree of cameo contrast.
As one might expect from an issue of only 20 proof coins (and a denomination whose proof examples were often subjected to multiple indignities including frequent mounting as jewelry or being spent outright during hard times), Premium Gem survivors of the 1877 are quite rare. Several other examples are certified in the Cameo or Deep/Ultra Cameo grades, but the population data are clearly riddled with duplications. Census: 3 in 66 Ultra Cameo (1 in 66 ★), 0 finer (4/17).
