Proof Gold Dollars
1882 G$1 PR65 Deep Cameo PCGS. The mintage of proof gold dollars rose above three figures in 1882 for the first time since 1861. A generous mintage of 125 proof gold dollars was accomplished in 1882, with small deliveries spaced throughout the year to satisfy customer demand. Of course, this production figure was dwarfed by the 207 proofs produced the following year and the 1,000+ proof mintages from 1884-1889. The issue has a fairly high survival rate, with probably 60-80 examples extant in all proof grades today.
The present coin is sharply detailed throughout, with deeply reflective fields that contrast profoundly with the frosty devices. The highest ribbon point is below the left side of the second 8 in the date and the interiors of many letters in the legend are frosty. The well-preserved lemon-yellow surfaces show a tiny planchet flake in the right obverse field and a few minor lintmarks on the reverse. Overall eye appeal is terrific. Population: 4 in 65 (1 in 65+) Deep Cameo, 7 finer (4/17).
