1839 $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Breen-6148, Variety 21, R.3. From a mintage of 27,021 pieces, the 1839 Classic Head quarter eagle is rare in MS61 condition, and very rare any finer. This impressive MS61 specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of softness on some star centers and the shield border. The lustrous orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded and eye appeal is strong. The final digit in the date is recut, causing earlier numismatists to believe this issue was an overdate. Census: 9 in 61, 4 finer (4/17).
