Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1888 $3 MS66 PCGS. The 1888 three dollar gold piece is one of only a few dates in the series that can be considered collectible in MS66, although even this issue is scarce so fine. PCGS reports two finer examples in MS67, although the present coin is still within the Condition Census grade level. The strike is bold save for the usual weakness on the wreath bowknot, and each side offers original peach-gold and straw-colored hues. Semiprooflike fields are hallmark of the 1888, which boasts a mintage of only 5,000 pieces and is known for its reflective surface qualities. A loupe reveals only a few tiny marks that determine the grade. Eye appeal abounds. Population: 33 in 66 (2 in 66+), 2 finer (4/17).
