Early Half Eagles
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Large 8, 13 Stars Reverse, BD-4, High R.4, AU55+ NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e, as usual. The dies are clashed and lapped with rim cuds on the reverse above the ES in STATES and the O in OF. A die crack connects the right-hand stars on the obverse. As scarce as BD-4 is with fewer than 100 pieces believed known, it is actually the most plentiful 1798 half eagle variety. This is the final use of both dies, and they are seen here in the latest die state.
The coin is bright yellow-gold with subtle reflectivity in the fields. The surfaces are generally smooth and without distractions. Strike weakness on the central hair curls and on the base of the eagle's neck is typical for the issue. Only slight high-point wear is discernible.
