1846-O $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1. The mintmark sits low above VE of FIVE, the more-available of two known varieties for this conditionally challenged New Orleans issue. The Doug Winter reference notes that the 1846-O is scarce and underrated in About Uncirculated condition and becomes rare in AU55 to AU58 grades. This near-Mint example is brilliant with bright, yellow-gold color and a strong definition on the devices. Faint, delicate lines account for the grade, but there are no heavy marks and traces of original, prooflike surface remain. Population: 10 in 58, 7 finer (4/17).
