Liberty Half Eagles
1862 $5 AU58 PCGS. As Garrett-Guth point out, once the federal government suspended gold payments during the early days of the Civil War, there was little need to strike gold coins. As a consequence, the mintage for half eagles dropped from 688,084 pieces in 1861 to a paltry 4,430 coins in 1862. All 1862 half eagles are rare -- regardless of grade -- even rarer than most C and D-mint gold from the 1840s and 1850s. This is a sharply defined example that shows bright yellow-gold color that is tinged with a slight hint of rose. Field marks are denser on the reverse than the obverse. One curious area is seen around the S and O in STATES OF -- an area that appears to be a planchet depression, although it may have been produced by a clogged die. Population: 7 in 58 (2 in 58+), 4 finer (4/17).
