Indian Half Eagles
1909-O $5 AU50 PCGS. CAC. In the Indian half eagle series, the 1909-O is the rarest issue in Mint State, which boosts collector demand for About Uncirculated coins. Gold coinage at the New Orleans Mint was suspended April 1st, 1909, after only 34,200 half eagles had been struck of Bela Lyon Pratt's Indian Head design. The bulk of the mintage entered circulation. Most survivors are lightly worn, and some grade as low as the VF level. However, CAC-approved coins are scarce across all grades. Considering the more than 1,000 1909-O half eagles certified in AU and Mint State, it is unusual that fewer than 100 coins across that same grade range have received CAC green labels. Here offered is well-struck yellow-gold example with lightly marked, satiny surfaces. The mintmark is clear, and there are no severe abrasions. CAC: 6 in 50, 91 finer (4/17).
