Liberty Double Eagles
1859 $20 XF40 PCGS. From a modest mintage of 43,597 pieces, the 1859 Liberty double eagle is scarce in all grades. Few examples were saved by contemporary collectors and only two specimens were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Republic, so high-grade examples are especially elusive. This attractive XF specimen shows some wear on the prongs of the coronet and hair curls, but the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster.
