Liberty Double Eagles
1877-CC $20 AU55+ NGC. Variety 1-A. The design of the double eagle was modified in 1877 to the Type 3 motif, with the denomination fully spelled out as TWENTY DOLLARS, instead of the abbreviated TWENTY D. of prior years. This was the only major design change for U.S. gold coinage that took place during the years the Carson City Mint was operating, making the issue an important one for branch mint type collectors. The 1877-CC claims a smallish mintage of 42,565 pieces, making it much more difficult to locate than the issues of the 1874-1876 era. The 1877-CC is usually seen in the XF-AU grade range, and most high-grade coins we know about today trace their origins to a hoard that entered the marketplace in the 1990's.
The present coin is a Plus-graded Choice AU specimen, with sharply detailed design elements that show only the slightest trace of wear. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and show the expected number of minor abrasions for the grade, with most of the marks on the obverse. Eye appeal is quite strong for the issue.
