Liberty Double Eagles
1889-CC $20 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The Carson City Mint resumed coinage operations in 1889 for the first time since 1885. A relatively small mintage of 30,945 Liberty double eagles was accomplished, but the issue is more available than that small production total suggests, thanks to a significant hoard (or hoards) that surfaced in the mid-1990's. The 1889-CC is still a scarce issue in Mint State grades, however. The present coin is an impressive Mint State specimen, with well-detailed design elements that exhibit a touch of the usual softness on some star centers. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces show the expected number of minor contact marks for the grade and retain much original mint luster. The overall presentation is quite attractive for a Carson City issue.
