Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 PCGS. Variety 1-A. As the most-available Type Three twenty from the Carson City Mint, the 1890-CC is plentiful in circulated grades but much is much scarcer in all Uncirculated conditions. This lustrous, greenish-gold example is well-struck and displays a few orange accents in the recesses and some deep-gray "dirt" on the high points of the portrait. Such originality is prized by gold specialists.
Virtually all examples of the issue show bagmarks from handling and transport during and after mintage. Coin-to-coin contact is less prevalent on the present example than on many, and only a short nick on the cheekbone and another on the chin exceed the minor chatter that exists sporadically nearby. As usual, the reverse fields and raised elements are more sheltered and less prone to marks. This piece is nice for the grade and will be a prized acquisition for the fortunate bidder who obtains it. Population: 103 in 61, 76 finer (4/17).
